Ketosis
Ketones are chemicals that the body makes in order to convert fat for energy. This usually occurs when there is not enough insulin in the blood to get energy from sugar. Ketones are acidic chemicals that can be toxic when they build up in the blood. When ketones are present in high numbers in the blood, the diagnosis is ketosis. [Source: MedicineNet.com.]

Ketosis is a sign of diabetes that is out of control or severe morning sickness (called hyperemesis gravidarum) that is not being treated. Ketosis can cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, confusion, coma, and if not treated quickly, even death. Your healthcare provider can quickly determine whether you have ketosis using urine test strips and a blood test.
