Magnesium sulfate
Magnesium sulfate is used to control preterm labor contractions. It is given intravenously in a hospital. If the contrations the magnesium sulfate stops the contractions, usually terbutaline tablets are prescribed and you can take them home with you.

Some of the side effects of magnesium sulfate include feeling hot, a sore throat, sleepiness, and headache--these side effects really feel like you have a bad cold or flu. Other side effects include:

  • Weak muscles
  • Red skin
  • Dry mouth
  • Poor vision, such as seeing double.

Magnesium sulfate is also used to treat women who are suffering from pre-eclampsia. It helps lower their blood pressure. [Source: Preeclampsia Foundation.]
