Ultrasound
Developed in the 1950s, ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves to create a real-time picture of the moving baby. Using ultrasound doctors and parents can see the baby move and examine the baby.

Ultrasound is often used to verify that a gestational sac (which contains the tiny baby who is about the size of a grain of rice) is present as early as 5 weeks. In addition, ultrasound can be used at anytime to watch the baby's heartbeat, determine the location of the placenta in the uterus, and to measure the baby's growth.

If you want to find out more about ultrasound, its history, and what it is used for, check out Obstetric Ultrasound.net.
